BACKGROUND TERMINOLOGY BACKGROUND TERMINOLOGY BACKGROUND TERMINOLOGY BACKGROUND

The term "stereoscopy" originates from the optics.

Charles Wheatstone's stereoscope, made possible, for the first time in history, to make two-dimensional images appear three-dimensional to human eyes.

By viewing two similar images with slightly different perspectives the illusion of a single image with depth is created.

William Kentridge’s draw in motion Stereoscope touches on how people make sense of the (real) world and the process of understanding it.

Adding a 3rd dimension to a regarded scene with the help of a device, represents the critical act of understanding.

MISSION STATEMENT

Enhancing the understanding of cultural spaces, is the core mission of Stereoskop.

We supply our gallery’s visitor with a valuable perspective through research (1st dimension), display (2nd dimension), and experience (3rd dimension).

DEGREE OF CULTURAL TENSION

The singularity of our gallery's work resides in its clear mandate to function as a tool, similar to the optical stereocope.

Exhibited topics are made comprehensible, as 3-dimensional spaces.

To one visitor these might be already familiar spaces; To the next they are completely new. Both will find an added perspective onto them.

What is narrated, is defined by the degree of cultural tension. The higher the degree, the more relevant the space.
